Our History

…because every child deserves a home

Family Promise of Hamilton County is the local affiliate of the national program whose vision is to be a nation in which every family has a home, a livelihood, and the chance to build a better future.

Family Promise began on October 27, 1986 in New Jersey by Karen Olsen who wanted to help the homeless. She brought together people in need with already existing community resources. Congregations provided hospitality space, a local YMCA provided showers and a car dealer gave them a van. The model spread in New Jersey and in 1988 the program went national as the National Interfaith Hospitality Network. In 2003 the name was changed to Family Promise to refer to the promise and potential inherent in every family, even if they don’t currently have a place to sleep.

Our affiliate began in 2015 when a small band of dedicated people began searching for solutions for the homeless in Hamilton County. They held informational meetings, learned about other national and state programs, and believed that Family Promise was the right program for our community.

In 2018, the first Board of Trustees was formed, along with gaining our 501 (c) (3) status and Family Promise of Hamilton County became a national affiliate. On May 9, 2019 we opened the doors of our Day Center and served our first family a few weeks later.

We are grateful for this first Board which worked diligently to launch Family Promise of Hamilton County.
